Part 1:
As for the White Dragon Award, the emphasis of this award is placed upon participation.
Candidates will need to complete all the listed activities to pass. A pass will be awarded to anyone who can complete the tasks set out competently and consistently.
The activities to be completed in this award are technically more advanced than the White Dragon Award.
The examiner will be a qualified WPA coach.
Activities to be completed
- Demonstrate how to low point a boule from a squatting position towards a jack placed at 6m from the throwing circle, stopping within 70cm of the jack.
- Demonstrate to the examiner that you can throw a jack within a circle of 1m in diameter whilst the examiner varies the distance to which the jack is thrown at least 3 times.
- Demonstrate how to point a boule to within a circle of 70cm in diameter whilst the examiner is responsible for ensuring that the distance at which a boule is pointed is varied at least 3 times.
While performing the above tasks, the examiner will record the stance, which forms part of the assessment.
Understanding
Candidates should be able to prove an understanding to the examiner of the following:
- Explain how points are gained in a game of pétanque.
- When a jack is thrown at the start of an end, what is the minimum distance from a jack or circle in an adjacent lane?
- When a circle is placed or scribed at the start of an end, what is the minimum distance from a circle or jack in an adjacent lane?
- State how far a circle (placed or scribed) must be located from an obstacle.
Part 2

Those taking Part 2 will have completed and passed Part 1 of this award.

Activities to be completed
- Demonstrate how to hit a boule without landing more than 50cm in front of the target boule at 6m from the throwing circle.
- Demonstrate how you correctly measure the distance between a boule and a jack.
- Demonstrate how you correctly measure the distance between the circle and the jack.
- To play a game of doubles adhering to the Rules of Petanque utilising all the shots performed in this award. Candidates will pass this exercise, providing that they have shown to the examiner that they have worked together as a team. This task must be completed to the satisfaction of the examiner.
While performing the above tasks, the examiner will record the stance, which forms part of the assessment.
Understanding
Candidates should be able to prove an understanding to the examiner of the following:
- What do the following terms mean concerning a team of three players: pointer, shooter and middle?
- What are the three scenarios to determine that a jack is dead?
- Why is it important to mark the positions of the boule and the jack after each boule has been thrown?
